or to be accountable is take responsibility for something, in there being reasonable for the success or failure of it. To accountable do not meaning to be in control.

“And yes, a vast majority of us were against this mindless invasion of Iraq from the beginning or at least saw the writing on the wall long before Peggy Noonan discovered that George W. Bush wasn't the second coming of Winston Churchill. Sadly, we agree that the mainstream media is part of the problem. Democracy suffers when not being held accountable by a vigorous press.”

#1. accountability (by elliot)

Accountability, or to be accountable, is to take responsibility for the success or failure of an action, decision, and or policy.

"...'a good transparent society is one where most of the people know what's going on most of the time.' (David Brin, 'the Accelerating Change conference this last fall') It's sousveillance coupled with the sense of responsibility arising from knowing just how powerful these tools can be. It's an active phenomenon of strong accountability and unfettered access. The participatory panopticon, conversely, is one of passive engagement, where transparency is an emergent phenomenon coming from connections between myriad independent personal archives."
